The Challenge

As EMC Insurance, a $2 billion property and casualty insurer, set out on a company-wide data modernization effort, it faced a massive undertaking. Years of legacy systems and business logic had created a complex environment that was difficult to modernize quickly while maintaining consistency in how key business metrics were defined and used across teams.

EMC chose dbt as part of its modern data stack, but migrating such a large and complex environment would require significant time and manual effort. The team also needed to understand the business logic, dependencies, and metric definitions embedded throughout its existing environment.

Traditional approaches would require significant manual effort across thousands of data objects and models. EMC wanted to accelerate that work, increase confidence in reporting, and free its data teams to focus on higher-value work.

EMC partnered with Analytics8 to accelerate migration work using Accler8, our AI-enabled accelerator for data migrations and modernizations. Accelr8 combines AI-powered automation, reusable assets, and proven modernization patterns with Analytics8 expert oversight. For EMC, it was used to accelerate work that would otherwise require significant manual analysis, conversion, documentation, and validation. Using Accelr8, we:

  • Accelerated the migration from SQL to dbt. Accelr8 analyzed and parsed existing SQL-based views and helped convert them into dbt models, replacing months of manual conversion work with an AI-enabled, repeatable process guided and validated by Analytics8 consultants.
  • Automated data discovery and lineage analysis. Accelr8 analyzed warehouse objects, legacy SQL, dependencies, and metadata, giving EMC teams rapid visibility into data logic that had previously been difficult and time-consuming to trace manually.
  • Uncovered inconsistent business metric definitions. Accelr8 identified variations of key business metrics across SQL extracts and Power BI, helping EMC understand how measures were calculated and where definitions differed across the organization.
  • Accelerated Power BI semantic model analysis. Accelr8 analyzed semantic models to show how metric logic was constructed, where differences existed across reports, and how those inconsistencies affected downstream analysis.
  • Documented models and business logic. As the environment was modernized, Analytics8 documented new models, definitions, and business rules to support consistent adoption across the enterprise.

The Results

Using Accelr8 alongside targeted process improvements, Analytics8 helped EMC dramatically accelerate its modernization while creating a more governed and understandable data environment.

  • Reduced a year-long migration effort to one month. Analytics8 migrated 130 SQL-based views into approximately 1,000 dbt models in just four weeks.
  • Reduced Power BI model analysis from months to days. Teams gained much faster visibility into how core business metrics were defined and used across the organization.
  • Redirected $6 million in annual manual effort. Work previously spent reconciling metrics could be redirected toward higher-value strategy supporting EMC’s broader modernization and AI goals.
  • Enabled rapid discovery across 45,000+ EDW objects. Teams gained access to lineage, logic, and metadata in under a minute per query.

The result is more than a faster migration. EMC now has a more scalable and governed data foundation- and a repeatable model for using AI-enabled acceleration to tackle complex modernization work at enterprise scale.
