Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Uses Spatial Relation Data to Determine Network Expansion

Company Overview

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian is a nonprofit regional healthcare delivery network in Orange County, California. Hoag consists of two acute-care hospitals, eight urgent care centers, six health centers, and a network of more than 1,500 physicians, 4,600 employees and 2,000 volunteers. More than 25,000 inpatients and 369,000 outpatients choose Hoag each year.

Problem

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian wanted a reliable way to measure population and patient demographics in relation to its Orange County hospitals and clinics. It also sought a dependable tool to help predict its future growth potential. These findings would then help Hoag determine where in its community might make the most sense to expand its health network by introducing other Hoag hospitals and clinics into the area.

Solution

With the new solution, Hoag is able to:

  • Combine geographic information with patient demographics criteria
  • Use spider plots in QlikMaps to determine the number of potential patients in relation to the locations of its hospitals and clinics.
  • See the directionality of patient travel, like how far one traveled from their home to a clinic.

Equipped with this information, Hoag can easily assess the need to open additional healthcare centers and what kinds of services they would need to provide based on customer demographics. Additionally, they have more insight into important questions about their existing centers, such as why some patients travel further to hospitals instead of seeking care closer to their residences, or why patients bounce around to various hospitals and clinic locations. With QlikMaps, Hoag is using spatial relation data to offer the appropriate services where they are needed, ultimately improving patient care.
